Founder Alex Tolmie created the choir out of a desire to have more singing in her life. After researching choirs to join around Canberra, Alex was not able to find one that sang the music she was interested in… indie pop. And so, Mixtape Chorus was born!
With a focus on the love of music, rather than the technical aspects of being in a choir, Mixtape aims to create a stress-free environment.
Following a successful launch, Mixtape continued to grow and thrive – creating a wonderful community of people who enjoy singing, laughing and sharing supper together.
Mixtape became an incorporated association in March 2016. As a non-profit chorus, Mixtape is self-funded, with all revenue directed to the running of the chorus. The Mixtape Committee keeps Mixtape running behind the scenes.
As the choir grew, Alex handed over the reins of musical director to Suhasini Sumithra. In 2018, Mixtape farewelled Su and welcomed Dan Bennett as new musical director. Dan is currently still leading Mixtape as the community continues to grow.
Mixtape has always emphasised the benefits of singing, particularly singing in a group, on mental health. Mixtape supports a number of mental health charities across Canberra, and even ran an event ‘Music 4 Mental Health’ as a part of ACT Mental Health Month 2019.
